Setting: When does this chapter happen? What historical events happen in the chapter?

It probably starts in 1966 or later; or before the Cultural Revolution.

It's mainly about Ji-Li. Ji-Li wants to be in the Liberation Army. She is a talented dancer and is flexible, so she is asked to join the Liberation Army. Her parents do not allow her to because of a "political problem" in the family.

Characters: What new information do you learn about the main characters and Chairman Mao?

We learn that she has a mother and father that work in the theater as actors. She has an younger brother named Ji-young and a younger sister named Ji-Yun. She also lives with her grandmother and their maid, Song Po-po.

We learn that Chairman Mao is a beloved leader. "Chairman Mao liberated China from oppression and defeated the Americans in Korea" (p. 6). The "new" China that Chairman Mao had built was getting stronger (p. 6-7).


Analysis: Why is this chapter important to the story?

It's important because we find out about her family, and we learn there is a problem with her family.
